Physiotherapy for Older Adults: Why Mobile Home Visits Make Sense
For older adults, the barriers to accessing physiotherapy — travel, parking, fatigue — often outweigh the benefits of going to a clinic. Mobile home visits change that equation entirely.
For many older adults, physiotherapy is most needed precisely when it's hardest to access. Pain, reduced mobility, difficulty driving, dependence on others for transport — these are the same factors that create the need for physiotherapy in the first place. Mobile home visits remove the barriers entirely, bringing qualified treatment to where the patient actually lives.
What conditions benefit most from home visit physio?
- Falls prevention and balance training — particularly important for those with a history of falls
- Post-surgical rehabilitation — knee and hip replacements, especially in early recovery
- Osteoarthritis management — joint-specific exercise programs to maintain function
- Parkinson's disease — balance, gait, and upper limb function
- Stroke rehabilitation — strength, coordination, and activities of daily living
- Chronic pain management — structured programs to improve function and reduce reliance on medication
- General deconditioning — rebuilding strength and mobility after illness or hospitalisation
Falls prevention — the most important intervention
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation in Australians over 65. A single fall can result in a hip fracture, prolonged hospitalisation, loss of independence, and a significantly accelerated decline in function. Evidence-based falls prevention programs — combining balance training, lower limb strengthening, and home hazard assessment — reduce fall rates by up to 30%. This is one of the highest-impact interventions available in aged care.
Working at the right pace
Home visit physiotherapy for older adults is adapted to the individual's capacity and goals. Sessions move at whatever pace is appropriate — there's no waiting room, no need to change into clinical clothes, and no pressure to keep to a tight schedule. Treatment can take place in the living room, the garden, or wherever the patient is most comfortable. Family members or carers are welcome to be present and involved.
No referral required
You do not need a GP referral to book a home visit physiotherapy appointment. However, if you have a chronic condition managed under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan, you may be eligible for up to 5 partially Medicare-subsidised physiotherapy sessions per year. Your GP can arrange this. Call Seth on 0410 676 862 to discuss what's appropriate for your situation.
