Physio for Bondi Beach Runners: Common Injuries and How to Fix Them

March 10, 2026·5 min read

Running the coastal trail from Bondi to Coogee is one of Sydney's great pleasures — until something goes wrong. Here are the most common injuries we treat in Bondi runners, and what actually fixes them.

The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is one of Sydney's most popular running routes. The combination of hills, sand, cliff paths, and hard concrete makes it a demanding environment on the body. As a mobile physio servicing Bondi and the Eastern Suburbs, these are the injuries we see most often.

Plantar fasciitis

The most common complaint among runners who train on sand or do barefoot beach sessions. The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue running along the sole of the foot, and it takes enormous load with each stride. Pain is typically worst with the first steps in the morning. Treatment involves load management, calf strengthening, and progressive return to running — not rest alone.

Achilles tendinopathy

The hilly terrain around Bondi puts the Achilles under significant eccentric load, particularly on downhill sections. Runners who increase their mileage too quickly or switch to minimalist shoes too fast are at highest risk. Heavy slow resistance training — not stretching — is the primary treatment.

IT band syndrome

The lateral knee pain that appears at a predictable distance into a run and forces you to stop. Caused by excessive hip adduction and internal rotation, usually related to hip abductor weakness. A running assessment can identify the pattern and guide the strength work needed.

Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)

Common in runners who increase their volume rapidly or return after a break. The pain is along the inner edge of the shin and worsens with running. Management focuses on reducing load, improving calf capacity, and gradually reintroducing mileage over 4–8 weeks.
